Two children found dead in Jefferson County, mother arrested

FESTUS – A woman was arrested Tuesday after she walked into the Festus Police Department and told authorities she shot one of her children and drowned the other, Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak said.

Both children were under 10 years old. One of them was found shot to death in his mother’s car, which was parked outside the Festus Police Station around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police said the child was shot elsewhere.

A second child was found dead from drowning south of Festus.

The deaths are being treated as homicides.

Police said the mother parked at the police station and turned herself in on Tuesday, before police even learned of the death.

Marshak said her clothes were wet and suggested it happened at the resort. Police went to the closest facility they could think of, which was Timber Creek in De Soto. Officers went to the scene and found a second dead child there.

Just before 2 p.m., a silver Mazda with Missouri license plates remained at the scene, with privacy curtains placed around it. Investigators searched the car and one of them pulled out a bloody beach towel.

During the press conference, Marshak said that police were looking for a third child, but within minutes they confirmed that the child had been found safe.
