A cyclist has died in the third fatal crash in Durham this month

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Durham Police are investigating the third fatal road accident this month.

The latest incident occurred on Monday just before 10 p.m. at 800 Ellis Road. DPD said Frederick Howell, 53, of Durham, was riding his bicycle southbound on Ellis Road when a vehicle struck him from behind. The driver escaped.

Howell was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a dark or black Polaris Razor or similar side-by-side off-road vehicle with reflective writing on the rear. The vehicle was last seen traveling south on Ellis Road near Riddle Road.

DPD said speed likely played a factor in the crash.

Earlier this month, 35-year-old Timothy Wayne Wright was struck and killed on May 4 while crossing North Miami Boulevard near Raynor Street. In this case, a dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee fled the scene.

Joshua Antoine Alston, 38, of Durham was later arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death, reckless driving, driving while license revoked due to revoked license revocation, and exceeding the safe speed.

On May 5, 28-year-old Phillip Farrington died after being hit by a 2014 Lexus sedan in the 2400 block of North Roxboro Street. Nicole Lee, 22, of Durham was charged with fatal hit and run, no driver’s license and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
