Armed police rush to tackle incident with man with ‘gun’

On Tuesday, May 28, County Police were alerted to reports of a man with a gun in Bournemouth.

As multiple police vehicles and armed response units arrived at the scene, the man was detained for search.

Officers discovered he was carrying a lighter and later confirmed he was not carrying a gun.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “On Tuesday 28 May 2024 at 2.23pm we received a report of a man believed to be in possession of a pistol in Horseshoe Common, Bournemouth. There were no reports of any threats.

“Officers arrived at the scene and searched the area. The man was stopped and detained for a search, after which it was found that he was in possession of a lighter matching the description.

“Although the report was made in good faith, it was a false alarm and there was no gun.”
