Watchdog launches an investigation into the leak of patient data at St. Hospital. Conal

The Data Protection Commission has launched an investigation into the leak last year of thousands of personal health records at the former St. Patrick’s Psychiatric Hospital. Conal’s in Letterkenny.

The investigation will look into how the HSE stores sensitive personal data on paper in external storage, some of which was featured in the TikTok video.

The data protection authority has been informed of security breaches in two such buildings.

“The breaches reported to the DPC involved two specific locations that were accessed by unauthorized third parties and the dissemination of videos recorded from these locations showing paper medical records,” a spokesman for the commission said.

Last November, a video appeared on TikTok showing a large number of historic patient files in an abandoned St Conal’s Hospital building. The documentation included the results of X-ray examinations and medical certificates. The person who shot the video claimed to have entered the building through an open door.

Last night the HSE confirmed that it had just received a Notice of Inquiry from the DPC into two separate data breaches in 2023.

“We will cooperate fully with this investigation,” it said. “The HSE takes all data breaches seriously and manages all breaches in accordance with data protection legislation and HSE policy.”
