The Senate votes unanimously to recall Senator Ningi after 10 weeks of suspension

On Tuesday, the Senate decided to dismiss Senator Abdul Ningi, who was suspended on March 12, 2024 for a period of three months.

Ningi, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, spent two months and two weeks on probation. He had two weeks left to complete his suspension.

However, following a motion tabled in Tuesday’s plenary session, Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro moved to dismiss Ningi.

The motion is titled “Unconditional Removal of Senator Abdul Ningi” and was co-sponsored by Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Olalere Oyewumi and Minority Whip, Osita Ngwu.

Moro urged the Senate to dismiss Ningi, who was suspended for three months on March 12, 2024.

He was accused of making baseless allegations of inflating the 2024 budget to the amount of N3.7trn.

Ningi stated this in an interview he gave to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service on March 9, 2024.

His suspension was made following a motion of national urgency filed by the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola.

Ningi has been suspended for violating laws, misconduct and unethical behavior.

Moro’s motion contained only one prayer, in which he demanded that the Senate reconsider the additional resolution of its votes and deliberations of Wednesday, March 13, 2024, and that Ningi be recalled for him to perform legislative duties.

Moro took full responsibility for Ningi’s actions and apologized on his behalf.

The prayer was unanimously approved and Senator Ningi was dismissed.

The motion reads: “Notes that on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, this very honorable 10th Senate in plenary suspended for three months the former Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi of Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

“The suspension followed a media interview he gave to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service on March 9, 2024, in which he alleged that approximately 3.7 trillion naira, representing over 10% of the 2024 budget, illegally introduced into the national budget for 2024.

“It further notes that Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi has been asked to respond to the allegations of budget overstatement leveled against the National Assembly following a motion of urgent national importance tabled by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

“And without commenting on the allegations, the Senate has decided to suspend Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi for three months for breach of law, misconduct and unethical behavior in relation to an interview he gave to BBC Media regarding the Appropriation Bill 2024, legislation , which processes part of it.

“Aware that the said Senator Abdul Ahmed Ninigi, who is under suspension, has spent over two months away from the National Assembly Complex and is required to return to continue his legislative activities as Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

“From the above, it is clear that the Senate Minority Leadership takes full responsibility for the actions of our colleague Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi and apologizes on his behalf.

“Accordingly, the Senate resolves: “Reconsider the additional resolution of the Senate (i) of the votes and proceedings of Wednesday, March 13, 2024, recalling Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi to the Senate as Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.”
